L'Elisir d'amore, Donizetti's famous comic opera, premiered in Milan in 1832. At the time he was enjoying a very productive time directing Teatro San Carlo from 1822 to 1838. The libretto, by Felice Romani is adapted from a recent opéra-comique written by Auber and Scribe and Donizetti contributed heavily to the creation of its characters. What was created in the end was a new format for romantic comic opera, in which authentic emotions prevail over the stereotypes of classical farce. The young lovers overcome all obstacles thanks to the sincerity and perseverance of their feelings and each character is defined by his own melodic signature. For example Dulcamara "the charlatan" is introduced by one of the most extraordinary comic arias of the history of opera, he will have to admit that a woman's charm is more powerful than his elixir. Adina, with her singing, can conquer Nemorino's hearth and, in turn, Nemorino manages to describe the authenticity of his feelings in the most passionate way with the famous piece una furtiva lacrima.
